AR Games, to czytanka angielskiego lektora Czas trwania nagrania 3:38 minyut (plik Mp3) ........ ..............................In the late 1950s, an American physicist and inventor, Willy Higinbotham, constructed the first device that allowed a simple tennis game to be played after it had been connected to the TV set. Willy had no idea that this invention was revolutionary, and he did not patent this first video game. In 1962, four scientists, Martin Greatz, Dan Edwards, Steve Russel and Peter Samson, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, created ?Spacewar??the first computer game, which was written for a computer named PDP-1. This game made a name for itself among the Institute workers, but after a few months, it was finally forgotten as the next scientific curiosity.
The first successful inventor who patented the video game was the legendary founder of Atari, Mr. Nolan Bushnell, who created the still very popular ball game, Pong. This simple idea became a great success, and over the next few years, Bushnell made a lot of money with those games. When he created the Pong game machines, they were placed in almost every American pub and bar. And this was the official beginning of the computer game industry. Do you know anyone who has never played a computer game? It?s almost impossible. In 1982, when Sir Clive Sinclair constructed the first home computer, the ZX Spectrum, this smart device became available to almost everyone. The cheap price, together with good graphics and music capabilities, allowed it to come into being a number of software companies. The result of this situation was the appearance of computer games like Knight Lore, Match Day or Bomb Jack. The following years saw the epoch of the Atari 800 XL and Commodore 64?simple constructions that allowed for the creation of more advanced games.
Nowadays, the computer game industry is worth more than $10 billion worldwide, and some market specialists are sure that in the next 10 years, this industry will surpass the powerful movie industry.
Modern computer games are better and more real and interactive than previous titles. In fact, if a computer game company wants to be successful, it has to invest more and more money, without any guarantee of success. Now the visionaries from the games industry are trying to foresee the direction of this market and the kinds of games desired by players in the future. The answer is this: games need to become closer and closer to reality, and increasingly interactive. If you want to play virtual golf, you should be able to hold a real golf club in your hand; if you want to fight virtual enemies, you should be able to punch your real fist, equipped with special movie sensors. Such gadgets are not fiction; it?s possible to use them now. For example, look at the gadgets from British company GameTrak, which sells a special golf learning system. It consists of a computer game and a real golf club. The other possibility is to buy special gloves that make virtual fighters follow the hands of the player.
These inventions are still not enough for the computer games market specialists. They aspire to create a virtual world that is similar to the real one. For almost a year, a group of game designers has been working to create a new type of computer game called Augmented Reality. This new kind of game is a mix between the real world surrounding the player, and a virtually created world. Imagine this situation: you really go, on your feet, into a street, when all of a sudden, you are attacked by various monsters and aliens, which look real. In this way, you meet a lot of people; you approach them and try to take their equipment, weapons, etc. The question is who is a real person, and who is not? If you approach a real one, you immediately lose power, but if you encounter a virtual one, you can fight with them and take their equipment.
This sounds like fiction, but the fact is that such AR games exist, and are being tested by hundreds of players. The essence of these games is that a player of this game moves in a real world (in the streets, cellars, forests, etc.), using special goggles. The fast microchips analyse the position of the real elements and add virtual figures on the screen. The Augmented Reality games allow fiction to be mixed with reality.
In conclusion, it is clear that new computer games will be out of date very soon. The new AR games will allow you to enter a new, fully three-dimensional and photorealistic world, where it will be possible to play with a new level of emotions. The hope is that this new system will be not become a reason for the crime rate to increase. AR players may have problems with differentiating between the real world and the virtual one. But one should not be pessimistic, because the high insurance money paid to possible AR victims is the best guarantee that the computer games companies will protect this new invention very well.
